The AG Music Group strikes again with our latest single Midnite. A nod to the sexy, late-night releases from Naked Music artists like Blue Six, Lisa Shaw and Aya blended with a pinch of jazz from The Rurals camp.
As a collector and DJ, General Oso tends to pull from the various corners of his sonic rolodex when sitting down to create. Some tracks have a blueprint and are more formulaic, but most start out as a stream of ideas that are whittled down to fine art when the other members apply their talents. This one followed the format of the later as Oso presented two rough directions of the then titled track, Lofi House Joint, to the other Generals with no expectation.
Weeks later at a vocal recording session for the previous release Night Mood, fellow house music head, General Oyane, connected with one of the directions and immediately started humming the hook harmony. They would go on to record a scratch vocal take that would provide the melodic framework for the first movement. The track was sent to both the writers' and producers' teams for tune-ups and enhancements.
The writers, Blu Dream and Oyane, moved quickly collaborating to work on the lyrics and melodies. Producers, Bebo and Oso opened the hood on the instrumentation. Bebo typically starts with the drums, stripping away all the layers to re-establish the track's foundation and give it the necessary sophistication and complexity that we are accustomed to. Non-exclusive to drums, his talent also lies in an ability to filter out the sounds that really work together, tweaking effects and plug-ins to ultimately take the song to a new level. After a few sessions, the pair would eventually emerge with a shiny, near-complete gem now titled Midnite.
The next few weeks to months would be dedicated to vocal layering with Oyane and Oso. The cherry on top would emerge as the sax solo, provided by a first-time collaboration with LA Based Randal Fisher. His warm and timeless tone provided the missing element, finally signaling the track was ready to send off to mix and master.
The Generals feel they are in many ways producing a 2021/22 version of their second full-length album, The Lunchbox; an album that provided something for everyone genre-wise. Look forward to more from this unit as they prepare to release their Nocturnal Emissions EP in 2022.
Stay tuned...
