Finally got our act together production-wise. Polished up song structures with hooks and bridges. This stage of our recording we also learned from our previous LP, the Lunchbox, what it means to record the"right" way, meaning in separates. This EP was recorded in multiple locations spanning from Inglewood, Long Beach, Compton and Costa Mesa California for over 5 years for some songs.
We were very pleased to be joined by the genius, multi-wind instrument mastermind Beeken, The Sax Machine, who killed it on every song except Daydreamer. Another collaborative blessing was with our neighbor and guitarist, Carlyle Barriteau, who currently tours with R&B Legend Bobby Caldwell. His rhythm guitar really helped to lock in the pocket on Sunday Morning and Way Out. And his acoustic gives Relajate the right amount of atmosphere to help you drift off into space.
Also, new to the Generals crew was a collaboration with guitarist Joe Blanchard, who gave us some lush Spanish / classical guitar on Clear, our nod to the old school single tapes, where you got an instrumental on the B-side. This union later resulted in a live performance at the Bomb Shelter with Joe backing us up.
General Sleproc threw us a major alley-oop and connected us with bass player Chad Clark, who laid down some lovely bass on Sunday Morning.
We also experimented with different mixing engineers. Mentor, collaborator and General Sleproc is one of the fam and has an incredibly fine-tuned musical ear. We definitely wanted to hear how he would mix Sunday Morning, Way Out, Relajate and Clear.
Through hanging out in the Long Beach scene we came across DJ S.O.U.L.O, whose sets at a summertime event called Park Jam, got he and myself talking about music. Found out he is an engineer at West Coast Unknown Productions in Long Beach, and it was a lettuce wrap folks. S.O.U.L.O will appear in later adventures, stay tuned.
The artwork was a collaborative project as well. My student at the time, Steve Minty, worked on the graphics. The photograph was from good friend Dinah Ismail.
